Wimbledon: Alcaraz beat the Danish Rune and is a semifinalist

The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, world number 1, advanced this Wednesday for the first time to the semifinals of the English Open tennis tournament at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, by beating the Danish Holger Rune (6) 7-6, ( 3), 6-4 and 6-4, instance in which he will face Russian Daniil Medvedev (3), who defeated American Christopher Eubanks (43) in five sets 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 , 7-6 (4) and 6-1.

After an even first set, in which Alcaraz was only able to take advantage in the tie break, in the second and third sets, the Spaniard needed only one break per boy to stay in both cases with the 6-4 victory and with the passage to the semifinals, after 2 hours and 23 minutes of contention on the grass of the central court of the All England Club, in London.

Alcaraz will meet in one of the semifinals next Friday against the Russian Medvedev (3), who had to suffer more than expected to eliminate the American Eubanks (43), one of the surprises in the London tournament, who had him 2-1 in set and led it to a tie break in the fourth.

The victory of the Russian in the tie break of the fourth set enlarged Medvedev and collapsed the until that precise moment American, who offered no resistance in the last set and the Russian kept it 6-1, to seal the victory after exactly 3 hours of game.

The other semifinal will be starred by the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who on Tuesday beat the Russian Andrey Rublev (7), and the Italian Jannik Sinner (8), who defeated the Russian Roman Safiullin (92) the day before.

In the women’s draw, the last two semifinalists were also defined: the Russian Aryna Sabalenka (2) beat the American Madison Keys (18) 6-2 and 6-4, after 1 hour and 29 minutes of play; while the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (6) later beat the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (3) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 and 6-1, after 1 hour and 55 minutes of confrontation.

Sabalenka and Jabeur will meet this Thursday for one of the semifinals, while the other will be starred by the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (76), who eliminated the Polish Iga Swiatek, world number 1, and the Czech Marketa Vondrousova (43), who defeated American Jessica Pegula (4).

On the other hand, in the men’s doubles draw, the Argentine Horacio Zeballos and his Spanish partner Marcel Granollers advanced to the semifinals of the Wimbledon Open, after defeating the American couple formed by Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 6-4 and 7- 5. Zeballos and Granollers will play one of the semifinals against the duo made up of the Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, who beat the New Zealander Michael Venus and the British Jamie Murray 6-4, 6-3.

With his access to the semifinals in the doubles draw, Zeballos repeats his best performances in the Grand Slams, since he had also accessed that instance in Australia 2022 and 2023; Roland Garros 2013, 2022 and 2023; Wimbledon 2021 and the US Open 2019.
