Wilms, Wijkstrom Crowned Portugal Mid-Amateur Champions; Lampreia Top-10

Sweden’s Hampus Wijkstrom staged a dramatic final-round comeback to claim the men’s title at the 8th International Mid-Amateur Championship of Portugal, while Germany’s Silvia Wilms secured a wire-to-wire victory in the women’s event.

Wijkstrom, who had posted rounds of 73 and 74, surged on the final day with a sensational 66, six strokes under par, to leapfrog the field. His total of 213, three strokes under par, gave him a four-shot advantage over his closest competitors.

Compatriot Jonas Olsson of Sweden and Ireland’s Joe Lyons tied for second place with a total of 217, one over par. Olsson finished with a 68, while Lyons carded a 71 in his final round.

The final day at Troia’s championship course proved challenging for many of the overnight leaders. Germany’s Yannic Voelker, who led after two rounds, shot a 75 (+3) to drop into a tie for fifth place with a total of 219.

Last year’s champion, Jonas Wallmo of Sweden, finished 12th after a final round of 78. Three-time German champion Danny Schmieding also struggled, ending tied for fifth place after a closing 74. France’s Blanco Herve made a strong charge with a 68 (-4) to finish fourth alone at 218 (+1).

In the women’s competition, Silvia Wilms of Germany demonstrated consistent dominance, leading from the start to clinch the trophy. She posted a total score of 227, eleven strokes over par, across her three rounds of 78, 70, and 79.

Wilms’ victory came with a comfortable six-shot lead over Switzerland’s Karin Luxon, who finished with a total of 233. This win marked a significant progression for Wilms, who placed third in 2023 and second in 2024 at the same event.

Sweden also claimed the Nations Cup, with Germany finishing as the runner-up in the team competition.

On the individual front, Marta Lampreia recorded the best Portuguese finish, placing sixth in the women’s event with a total of 249 (+33). Fellow Portuguese player Arminda Von Kanel finished eighth at 256 (+40).

Ricardo Soares was the top Portuguese male competitor, securing 16th place with a total score of 226, ten strokes over par.
