Wife of Hal Finney Hosts Bitcoin Event

Fran Finney, wife of late Bitcoin pioneer Hal Finney, has announced an event to support ALS victims. Hal Finney is known as one of the first Bitcoiners in the world. Unfortunately, the computer scientist died of ALS not long after Bitcoin’s launch.

Legend within the community

Hal Finney was and is actually a true legend within the Bitcoin community. He is known, among other things, for his tweet with the message “Running Bitcoin” on January 11, 2009, a few days after the launch of Bitcoin. Partly for that reason, people have long thought that Finney was the man behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Some thought Finney acted interacting with Nakamoto in the beginning to pretend Bitcoin was gaining traction.

The event will be called “Running Bitcoin” to honor Finney’s first Bitcoin tweet. As part of the event, Finney’s wife is asking people to run a half marathon between January 1 and January 10, 2023.

Hal Finney himself was also a big running fan, so the choice for this sport is no surprise. Recently, Fran Finney reactivated Hal’s account to save it from the so-called inactivity purge. These days, if accounts don’t respond for a long time, other users get the chance to claim the username in question.

Finney got there early

Incidentally, Finney is also an early pioneer in the world of crypto. For example, in 2004 he created Reusable Proof of Work (RPOW), a system that makes it possible to reuse Hashcash coins. RPOW is often seen as the first type of cryptocurrency, although it ran on a centralized server.

Finney also contributed to Bitcoin’s code in 2008 and early 2009, before Satoshi Nakamoto launched it publicly in January 2009. He was also the recipient of the first Bitcoin transaction, in which Satoshi Nakamoto sent him 10 Bitcoin.

Before he was diagnosed with ALS in August 2009, he was an avid runner. After several years of battling the disease, Finney has been cryogenically frozen. The computer scientist probably hopes that he can be brought back to life in this way in the future.
