WI v IRE: Ireland beat West Indies in second ODI, tier 1-1 series

Kingston. Ireland beat the West Indies by five wickets in the second rain-affected ODI at Sabina Park. Ireland needed 230 to win and scored 157 from four in 32 overs when play was stopped for 90 minutes due to rain. On the restart of play, Ireland achieved a target of 168 runs from 36 overs using the Duckworth-Lewis method. Ireland made the remaining runs on seven balls for the loss of a wicket. Now the series is tied 1-1 and the last game will be played here on Sunday.

The match was scheduled for Tuesday, but Ireland did not have a full XI due to five corona cases and two injured players. Captain Andy Balbirnie was also unable to play this match on Thursday. William Porterfield and deputy captain Paul Stirling gave Ireland a strong start with 37 runs from the first five overs. Harry Tector played an undefeated 54 from 75 balls, which is his second consecutive half-century.

The West Indies team, sent first at bat, got off to a poor start. Medium pace Craig Young fired the first three batters cheaply. The West Indies’ score was three for 12 from four overs. McBrian then fired Kieron Pollard and Roston Chase on the cheap. Sharmar Brooks was ruled out for 43 runs on 64 balls. Odeon Smith hit McBrian for two sixes to take the team past 200 runs.
