Why is La Tomatina celebrated?

The exact date of Tomatina is unclear as many sources have different accounts. However, the festival’s official website says it began in 1945 with the Gigantes y cabezudos parade, which translates to the parade of giants and big heads in English.

The parade is held in the Plaza del Pueblo on the last Wednesday of August. Here participants will parade through the main square wearing costumes and giant paper fish heads.

During this parade in the year 1945, a group of youths were disturbing the parade so much that one of the participants dropped a paper.

The angry participants created a ruckus and eventually started throwing things at the crowd of youths and spectators. Soon everyone started throwing things at each other.

There was a vegetable stall nearby and after some time the crowd started using fruits and vegetables from the stand as ammunition.

Other sources say that the incident was caused by a quarrel between two farmers in the Plaza del Pueblo, in which the whole town eventually got involved and started throwing vegetables at each other.
