In reality, Sandeep was traveling on the Shatabdi train with his partner Rajpal Singh, and during the journey, he was accidentally shot in the back by a guard from the Railway Protection Force. Due to this, he was admitted to PGIMER, Chandigarh for a long time and stayed away from hockey for a long time. However, Sandeep did not give up and returned to play hockey for India two years later in 2008 through the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. He scored a total of nine goals in that tournament.

India made history under Sandeep’s captaincy

Sandeep Singh was appointed as the captain of the Indian hockey team in the same year 2009 and under his captaincy, India won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup title after 13 years. Sandeep scored six goals in this tournament and for that he was voted the best player. Under Sandeep’s leadership, India made it to the 2012 London Olympics, where his own contribution was important.

He scored more than 150 goals in his career

Talking about the skill of the former Indian captain, people started calling him by the name ‘Flicker Singh’ due to his play. Sandeep used to drag-flick at a speed of 145 kmph at the time, which was considered the fastest in the world. He scored more than 150 goals for India in his career and played his last cap in 2016.

Entry into politics in 2019

After retiring from the hockey field, Sandeep Singh turned to politics and contested Pehowa’s 2019 Haryana Assembly election on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket, defeating Mandeep Singh of the then Congress by over 5000 votes. The party also benefited from Sandeep’s popularity and he became a Sikh face for the BJP in Haryana, after which he was appointed sports minister in Manohar Lal Khattar’s government.

The development came a day after the Chandigarh police registered a case against Singh over the complaint of a youth athletics coach from the state. Singh has also been accused of taking hostages and threatening the coach.
