Alibaba announced a major reorganization of its management leadership before the great restructuring of the business with the appointment of Eddie Wu as the company’s new CEOcurrent president of Taobao and Tmall and one of the co-founders of the Chinese company, who will replace as of September 10 daniel zhang as chief executive.

He graduated with a degree in computer science from Zhejiang University of Technology in 1996 and later joined the China Yellow Pages, where he met Jack Ma. Following in Ma’s footsteps, Wu joined the construction of Alibaba Group as the first programmer of the 18 founders, according to The Drum. After Alibaba decided to split into six units, he was appointed Chairman of Taobao Group and Tmall; previously, the two units were China’s two largest e-commerce services. Wu has also been the chief technology officer of key companies including Taobao and Alipay, the mobile payment service run by Alibaba affiliate Ant Group. In addition, he was in charge of Alibaba’s monetization platform on Taobao and Tmall, as well as leading efforts to power the Taobao mobile app that propelled the company into the smartphone era.
