The Chicago White Sox announced that they have promoted Dominican veteran Johnny Cueto from Triple-A Charlotte and sent infielder Danny Mendick to that branch. Cueto will start Monday’s game on the mound against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
Cueto, 36, a two-time All-Star, is 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA (9 LP in 15.2 IL) and 17 strikeouts in four starts for Charlotte after signing a minor league deal with Chicago. on April 8. He will use the number 47.
Cueto spent the 2021 season with San Francisco, where he went 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 114.2 innings. Those win, inning and strikeout totals were the highest for him since 2017.
The Dominican has a lifetime record of 135-97 with an ERA of 3.45, 1,710 strikeouts, 17 complete games and eight shutouts in 350 career appearances spread over 14 Major League seasons with the Reds (2008-2015), Royals (2015) and Giants (2016-21). He won the 2015 World Series with Kansas City.
