White House Slams Amazon Over Alleged Plans to Display Trump Tariff-Driven Price Increases

The White House is firing shots at Amazon, accusing the company of playing politics. This comes after rumors surfaced that Amazon might start showing customers how much extra they’re paying due to Trump-era tariffs.

Caroline Leavitt, a White House spokesperson, made the comments during a press briefing marking 100 days since Donald Trump started his second term as president. A reporter asked her about the Amazon rumors. Leavitt shot back, calling Amazon’s alleged plan “malicious” and “politically motivated.” She even pulled out a 2021 Reuters article showing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos alongside a claim that Amazon partnered with a Chinese propaganda firm.

Leavitt used this to push Trump’s “America First” message. “This is another reason Americans should buy American,” she said. “We need to bring key supply chains home and boost our own production.”

But Amazon quickly denied the rumors. In a statement to the Washington Post, which Bezos owns, the company said it never planned to show customers the extra cost of tariffs on its main website or elsewhere.

Trump’s tariffs are a hot topic. He slapped a 145% tariff on Chinese goods and a 10% tariff on imports from most other countries. These tariffs are currently on hold for 90 days.
