When Rohit Sharma ended up at number 9 with an injured finger, the bowlers remembered their grandmother.

On December 7, 2022, exactly a year ago, Rohit Sharma had played an innings that he might not be able to play again in his career. In fact, the ODI match between India and Bangladesh will be played at the Mirpur ground. In this match, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. In the very second over of the game, the ball hit the thumb of Rohit Sharma, who was standing at second slip, and the catch was dropped. Additionally, Team India captain Rohit Sharma suffered a fractured thumb.

Rohit Sharma had to leave the field in the second over of the game and Rajat Patidar came on the field in his place. Bangladesh scored 271 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs, including a century from Mehdi Hasan Miraz. At number 8, Mehdi played an unbeaten innings of 100 runs in 83 balls and led his team to a good result. Team India, chasing this goal from Bangladesh, didn’t get off to a good start, scoring four wickets for just 65 runs.

However, thereafter, there was a brilliant 124-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Akshar Patel that brought Team India back into the game. Akshar was out after scoring 56 runs in 56 balls and Shreyas Iyer was out after scoring 82 runs in 102 balls. After that, Team India ran into trouble again and then Rohit Sharma came on the field at number 9 with a broken thumb.

Rohit once again made the Indian fans happy by hitting two sixes and a four off Ebadat Hussain in the 45th over. Team India needed 40 runs to win in the two remaining overs after the 48th over, but the Bangladesh bowlers had given up even before Rohit’s broken finger. Rohit played an unbeaten innings of 51 runs off 28 balls but couldn’t get much support from the other end and Team India lost that match by just 5 runs. Rohit had said in the post-match presentation that fortunately the thumb was dislocated and some stitches were done so I could bat. If it had been completely broken, I wouldn’t have been able to beat it.
