At the same time, planning was being done to make ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ in the 40s, during that time there was partition in the country. After independence, the director of the film moved to Pakistan and it was closed.

After independence, Asif decided to make the movie ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. He gave the role of Salim to Dilip Kumar and cast Nargis for the role of Anarkali. However, according to media reports, when Nargis learned that Dilip Kumar would be playing the role of Salim, he refused to work on the film. This is also mentioned in Rajkumar Keswani’s book ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, according to which there were two reasons for Nargis’ refusal to play Anarkali.
