WhatsApp is testing a new feature allowing users to manage smartphone storage more effectively by providing a detailed breakdown of space consumed by individual conversations.
This much-anticipated innovation targets a common user complaint: the messaging app often consumes significant device storage. Current management options are not simple or immediate.
The upcoming system will allow users to see precisely how much space each chat occupies. Currently, WhatsApp displays aggregated storage data.
Discovered in beta versions by WABetaInfo, the functionality will be accessible directly on the “contact info” page for each conversation. Users will clearly see storage usage per chat.
The primary benefit is enabling users to quickly identify large media files within specific chats. This simplifies decisions on which conversations to clear to free up phone memory.
An official release date for the storage management feature is not yet available. Its rollout depends on ongoing development and potential integration with other planned components.
In related news, WhatsApp recently introduced a message translation function for its iPhone application. This follows the footsteps of an existing Android feature.
The iOS version supports numerous languages directly. Users can access this by tapping and holding a received message, then selecting “More…” and “Translate.”
WhatsApp states this feature prioritizes privacy. Translations occur directly on the user’s device without sending data to external servers.
This translation capability extends to individual chats, group conversations, and channel updates. Android users also have the option for automatic full conversation translation.
