WhatsApp announced an update to the privacy policy changes on February 8. After the reaction of more than dissatisfied users, Whatsapp is postponing its update until May 15. In fact, this decision can be puzzling, since the app had proclaimed it at the beginning: “We will always protect your personal conversations with end-to-end encryption, so that neither Whatsapp nor Facebook can see these private messages”. This is the reason why we do not keep a record of everyone’s messages or calls. We also can’t see your shared location and we don’t share your contacts with Facebook”.
Whatsapp users refuse to share their data with Facebook and other applications. They are therefore turning to other similar applications, such as Signal. The latter saw a surprising increase of 4,200% in downloads. After a more than controversial decision and given the increase in alternative applications, one can ask what will happen with this update that calls into question the basic principles guaranteed by Whatsapp.
