Disappointment for Sainz as Dakar Dreams are Put on Hold
Carlos Sainz’s aspirations of securing a Dakar win with Ford have been put on hold for another year. The FIA’s decision to disqualify the Ford Raptor #225, which Sainz shares with co-driver Lucas Cruz, has left the Spanish driver reeling.
A Minor Accident with Major Consequences
The incident occurred on a dune at low speed, with Sainz acknowledging that it was his mistake. However, the damage to the safety arch was deemed too severe for the FIA to allow the vehicle to continue. Sainz expressed his respect for the FIA’s decision but felt that a balance needed to be struck.
A Matter of Interpretation
Ford had argued that, as the manufacturer of the chassis, they could repair the damage, including the safety arch. However, the FIA’s interpretation of the regulations only permits welding as a means of repair. The team’s proposed solution of reinforcing the arch with an additional piece was not accepted.
A Crushing Blow for Sainz
Sainz described his abandonment as “one of the great disappointments” of his career. Despite his frustration, he acknowledged that racing is unpredictable and that he would have to look ahead to the future. The Spanish driver expressed his confidence in his teammate, Ekström, and the potential for the team to learn from their experiences.
