What costs do the plugs in the DR entail?

It no longer matters what time or specific intercept you are in Greater Santo Domingo, You can witness at any time a long traffic jam that prevents you from reaching your destination on time and calmly.

In the past, it was common to plan some “strategic” route which you took to avoid any type of road mishap.

Now it is likely that you plan a shortcut to move easily to some point, and that you do not arrive on time for your appointment, work or medical consultation, due to the traffic jams that prevail in the streets and neuralgic avenues of the city.

There are innumerable complaints from drivers and even passers-by, who express their discomfort about the situation that becomes complex every day, and that so far the authorities have not found a solution.

However, given this scenario, several environmental, urban and human behavior specialists explained to Daily Listin the implication of blockages, in each of its areas.

This was done by the Dominican urban planner Erick Dorrejo, who stated that the origin of traffic jams is linked to the lack of long-term planning, land use planning and land use in the Dominican Republic.

Dorrejo argued that for a little more than five decades, the streets were built considering measures that, for the current times, do not correspond, due to the growth of the population, mainly in the city.

He added that, since then, the only thing that “has happened is that the city has expanded its occupation area. However, what was built in the 60s, 70s and 80s has no possibility of expansion”.

For Dorrejo, the concentration in the city of all industries, companies, jobs and services directly influences the lack of space to circulate.

What is the urban solution to this problem?

The specialist proposed as a solution, the deconcentration of the industries in the city, and that they be established in the periphery, that is, close to the Santo Domingo ring road, as well as the other services offered to citizens.

In addition, he said that one of the aspects that benefits this scenario is the emergence of virtuality, since it allows solutions to desires and services, regardless of resorting to a building.

In this sense, he suggested that public institutions be located outside the Central area, and instead offer solutions and assistance from other points.

The psychological and emotional

The psychologist Heidy Camilo told Daily Listin that there are countless patients who come to his office disgusted by the plugs.

Camilo expressed that the way to cope with traffic jams will depend on each patient and their way of being, but that in most cases they tend to generate high levels of stress, anxiety, irritability and fatigue.

In fact, in this last element, he said that many people come to quit their jobs because the journey is exhausting for them due to the heavy traffic jams and the situations they have to deal with.

It should be noted that these citizens make this decision, since they prefer to spend that time in stressful displacement with their families or some other job, even if they stop receiving a certain amount of money, while they stop spending one or two hours in a stopper with a bad temper

So, Camilo recommends the following tips to those people who go through this type of scene on a daily basis on their way to work, home and the supermarket:

1- Breathe 2-Listen to music

As a way to manage those factors and prevent some unfortunate situation from happening.

Release of sulfur and carbon dioxide gases

Staying for several minutes and even hours in the row of a blockage can release sulfur dioxide and carbon gases from the vehicles, said Environmentalist Luis Carvajal.

Carvajal indicated that the environmental cost of the emission of these gases from hundreds of cars running at the same time at a given point is high.
