Airplanes are one of the safest forms of transportation in the world and the chances of dying in an accident are much lower than traveling by car.
Thousands of flights are carried out every day and although some may experience difficulties, pilots manage to control these unforeseen events and thus ensure the safety of passengers.
Figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) confirm this. The 2022 industrial safety report found that there were only five fatal accidents this year.
Although accidents and emergencies occur due to weather conditions or technical failures, more and more flights manage to complete their itinerary safely.
What are the chances of dying in a plane crash?
Of the more than 32.2 million commercial flights that took place in 2022, there were only five aviation accidents in which crew and passengers lost their lives.
This means that the risk of dying in an aircraft accident is extremely low, but not zero. IATA experts estimate the probability at 0.11.
This means that a person would have to fly every day for 25,214 years to suffer a fatal accident on a commercial aircraft.
The US National Council also announced that the chance of dying in a plane crash is about 1 in 205,552.
To illustrate the magnitude: every time you travel by car, this value would be 1 in 102; although everything depends on the road conditions of each country.
What are the safest seats on a plane?
In every aircraft accident, the number of deaths and injuries is usually high, which is why the accident receives a lot of media attention.
This has led to questions about whether there really are safer seats in aircraft fuselages.
A study conducted by Time Magazine analyzed 35 years of plane crashes and databases to find out the fatalities and survivors.
From this they were able to conclude that the aisle and back seats of the plane they are the safest because they have the lowest probability of death (28%).
The side seats in the rear come next with 32%, followed by the windows in the middle part of the aircraft above the wings.
However, the most unsafe seats are in the same area but in the aisle.
Interestingly, many people tend to reserve seats at the front because it makes it quicker and easier for them to get on and off the plane.
Or they prioritize this decision by choosing window seats to better enjoy the scenery during the flight.
The truth is that middle seats are safest than window or aisle seats because of the space they provide in front of the fuselage.
Central Queensland University aviation specialist Doug Drury explained the type of aircraft also makes a difference when an accident occurs.
“Larger aircraft will have more structural material and therefore more strength to withstand pressure at altitude.” “That means they can provide additional protection in an emergency,” he said.
Despite this data, airplanes are still the safest means of transportation and therefore, every time you fly, you can have the peace of mind that you will not face any disaster.
