“We have to put a strategy in place, otherwise…”

Managers, coaches and, of course, also players. Everyone has their part to blame for Chelsea’s situation, or so Thiago Silva believes. In statements after the European elimination against Real Madrid, the captain of the London team believes that “We cannot blame managers if we do not assume our responsibility. It is a difficult period for the club, with a lot of indecision.”.

The defeat against the white team is the end of a disastrous season. Eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, ranked 11th in the Premier League and with the impossibility of reaching the European places, Chelsea has run out of goals. “Everyone talks too much about replacing coaches. I think that we, as players, must also assume our responsibility.”added the Brazilian defender in the mixed zone at Stamford Bridge.

The volatility of Todd Boehly’s project has wreaked havoc on the club’s objectives for this season, and Thiago Silva is aware of it: “We have had three coaches this season, plus a fourth with Bruno (Saltor), and we have not won. Today we have lost and with (Frank) Lampard we have not won (any game). Everybody talks about the coach, but we must analyze what has been done wrong and try to change”.

And among those things that the captain of the Blues It stands out that “they have done wrong” is the preparation of the template. The new owners of the Stamford Bridge team invested, between the summer of 2022 and the winter of 2023, more than 600 million euros. A revolution in the squad with 16 new faces that, in the end, has not been reflected on the field of play but in day-to-day life: “We had to increase the size of the dressing room because it did not fit the size of the template. There will always be someone upset because not everyone can play. The coach can only select eleven from a squad of thirty-somethings, it’s difficult”.

“We have signed eight (players) in January,” said Thiago Silva and, as happened when setting up the Champions League list, “some cannot enter the template”. A lack of control regarding the arrival of a footballer at Stamford Bridge refers to the fact that it cannot have a place in the 2023/2024 season if Chelsea wants to fight for big things again. In the words of the Brazilian captain of the Blues, “We have to stop and start a strategy, otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes”.

After the match against Real Madrid, Thiago Silva was visibly moved. The Brazilian defender was even seen taking a ball as a souvenir. And it is that, with 38 years and a contract until June 2024, this may have put an end to his history with the Champions League: “It has been a very difficult and frustrating season for me personally. It could have been my last game in the Champions League. I only have one year left on my contract and my career is coming to an end. It is a very sad day. But I think we must continue working to try to win as many games as possible until the end of the season.”
