A significant portion of the population in Mexico is experiencing a trend that has left many angry, as several mayors have recently faced severe water scarcity in their areas. The details of this situation and the affected areas are as follows.
The Mexican government has made the difficult decision to cut water supply to several mayorships this month due to lack of rains and low water availability in storage systems. This measure aims to provide more equal access to water for all, and it will be achieved through an intermittent supply scheme by Tandeo, where water will be distributed at different times according to the area.
The authorities have confirmed that the water cut will affect 10 mayors, including Álvaro Obregón, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco. Within these mayors, a total of 284 colonies will face restrictions on the water supply. Some of the affected colonies include Lomas del Capulín, Lomas de la Era in Álvaro Obregón; Adolfo Ruiz Cortínez, Ajusco, Pedregal de Santo Domingo in Coyoacán; Cruz Blanca, Loma del Padre in Cuajimalpa; Cuautepec Arboledas, La Casilda in Gustavo A. Madero; El Mirador, Paraíso in Iztapalapa; Atacaxco in Magdalena Contreras; San Agustín Ohtenco town in Milpa Alta; Selene in Tláhuac; El Colibrit in Tlalpan; and Cristo Rey in Xochimilco.
The water cut is expected to start immediately and will be applied throughout the month. However, it will not be a total cut, but rather an intermittent system where water will be supplied at different times. The reason for this measure is the scarcity of rain, which has caused critical levels in dams and aquifers that supply the city.
The government considers these measures necessary in times of drought to guarantee that everyone has access to water. For citizens affected by the water cuts, the government has made available free water pipes, which can be requested through Locatel at 55 5658 1111 or the Water System of Mexico City at 55 5654 3210. Additionally, those affected will be able to access a 95% discount on the payment of rights for connection to the water network as well as drainage.
The current water cuts in many cities in Mexico reflect the significant impact of climate change on the population. This month, a total of 10 mayors and more than 180 municipalities will experience the real value of water. It is essential for those affected to stay informed about the news and the water cut schedules in their area, as this measure aims to teach the population to value water and ensure its availability for all.
