
The US calls the incident of two women walking naked in the Indian state of Manipur ‘brutal and horrific’. US Ambassador Eric Garcetti expressed deep concern about the incident and said it was ‘brutal and horrific’.
He said that Washington is ready to help Delhi to resolve what happened in Manipur.
Meanwhile, there were protests across India over the incident of rape of women. Both houses of Parliament were in third turmoil on Monday. In addition, human rights organizations have protested in several areas of India demanding a quick investigation into the incident.
The session of both the Houses of Parliament became heated on the third day of the session on Monday demanding the Prime Minister’s statement and discussion. The opposition demands that the meeting should be stopped and the situation in Manipur should be discussed. The Prime Minister should make a statement. Under pressure, at the end of the day, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the government is willing to negotiate.
As per the pre-announced decision on Monday, the parliamentarians of the new alliance of the opposition parties ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’ (India) started a dharna at the foot of the Gandhi statue outside the Parliament building around 10:30 am.
The opposition demands that what the Prime Minister said about Manipur outside the Parliament, he should say it inside the Parliament.
After the formation of the opposition alliance called ‘India’, this was the first time that the members of that organization were united and took part in a protest. The opposition MPs started shouting slogans against the government with placards and posters. Congress president and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Mallikarjun Kharge, Member of Parliament Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury participated in the protest; Trinamool Congress MPs Abhishek Banerjee, Sudeep Banerjee, Kakali Ghosh Dastidar; Aam Aadmi Party Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha; DMK’s TR Balu; Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament actress Jaya Bachchan and others.
After that, the MPs of the opposition party voiced the same demand even after coming inside the parliament.
BJP members of parliament also demonstrated in response to the opposition. They protested against the violence against women in various states including opposition-ruled Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand. Both sides had different posters.
Incidentally, Manipur has been in turmoil for several months. The BJP-ruled northeastern state of Manipur has been in turmoil over the claim of the majority Meitei community to be included in the Scheduled Castes. There was a heated situation around the program of the student organization ‘All Tribal Students Union of Manipur’ (ATSUM) on May 3. The Manipur High Court directed the state government to consider the issue of Scheduled Tribe status to the Meiteis. After that, the organizations of various ethnic groups, including Kuki, Jo, came in opposition to him. And from that incident violence started there. So far about two hundred people have died and more than 50 thousand people have been rendered homeless in Manipur.
