Warning! A new spyware threatens Android users disguised as a VPN

Security experts from ESET company reveal a new recurring and current threat targeting Android users. This time we have a new spyware making the rounds posing as popular VPN apps.

The problem is the Bahamut threat discovered in tampered versions of popular VPN apps. The goal is also traditional and aims to compromise the privacy of users caught up in this lure.

Beware of SoftVPN and OpenVPN apps for Android

In the report published by ESET specialists, we learned that the compromised applications were SoftVPN and OpenVPN. They are two popular offers in this market, therefore an ideal way to reach a larger number of users.

Unfortunately for those caught up in this scam, the apps in question do not enhance your privacy, but rather compromise that right. They were the found vehicle for another traditional scheme of identity fraud🇧🇷

Once installed on the victims’ smartphones, the spyware Bahamut was carrying out a spy plan on the victim. The goal is to collect information on phone calls, messages, and the location of injured people.

As if that were not enough, there is also a special tendency to steal bank data present in infected Android smartphones. This information is collected without the user being aware of what happened.

The malicious apps were distributed via the SecureVPN website

The spread method of these rigged apps was a similarly rigged SecureVPN website. Users were directed to this location in search of an authentication key for the service, which the official version does not require.

This is an important point that we must emphasize to avoid more victims. If you are new to the SecureVPN service, note that it will not ask you for an authentication key to activate it.

Another fact that is important to note is that none of these infected applications were downloaded from the Play Store, so once again, we recommend our readers to avoid installing applications outside of the official Google store as much as possible.
