Japan announced on Friday an intensification of its sanctions against Moscow because of the invasion of Ukraine, including an embargo on electric vehicles bound for Russia.
Tokyo had previously frozen the assets of Russian individuals and groups and banned the export of goods to Russian organizations linked to the military, as well as the export of construction and engineering services.
On Friday, the Japanese government expanded the list of goods affected by its sanctions to include vehicles with engines of 1,900 cc or more, as well as hybrid and electric cars. Other products added to the list include steel, plastic products and electronic parts “which can be diverted for military purposes”, Japan said in a statement. These new sanctions will come into effect on August 9.
