War in Ukraine: Renault made “a coherent choice” in Russia, says Emmanuel Macron

A choice “coherent.” Emmanuel Macron welcomed Renault’s decision to suspend its activities in Russia because of the war in Ukraine. “Renault made a choice, I respect it” and “the French State, as a shareholder, did not oppose this choice”, declared Thursday, March 24 the French president in front of the press at the end of the NATO and G7 summits. This choice is “coherent” with the strategy of the group, according to him.

The French automaker, publicly targeted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for its activities in Russia, announced on Wednesday to immediately suspend the activities of its Moscow plant and assess “the possible options concerning his participation” in its large Russian subsidiary, AvtoVAZ.

Emmanuel Macron recalled having “explicitly asked that all French companies operating in sectors under sanctions, with partners under sanctions respect what France decides”. But, faced with “pressures” and to “reputational risk”, “my position is to let companies decide for themselves”he added.
