NATO will provide Ukraine with protective equipment against “chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats”said the secretary of the Alliance, the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg. Following an extraordinary summit of NATO leaders on Thursday 24 March, he declared that the Allies “agreed to provide equipment to help Ukraine protect itself against [ces] threat”, saying “concerned” by the possibility of the use of such weapons in Ukraine after the Russian invasion.

Thus, NATO will also protect its forces deployed on the eastern flank against these threats, he added.

40,000 NATO soldiers on the eastern flank

After Volodymyr Zelensky once again called on NATO for help in the face of the Russian army’s invasion of Ukraine, Jens Stoltenberg gave an update on the support measures provided to Ukraine. “NATO leaders agreed today on the need to provide further support to Ukraine,” he said, adding that 40,000 NATO soldiers were deployed on the eastern flank of Europe. “Leaders approved the establishment of four new NATO battlegroups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia”he confirmed. Groups coming “to be added to the four battlegroups already present in the Baltic countries and in Poland.”

“The allies provide considerable aid, lethal weapons, anti-aircraft and anti-tank systems”, said Jens Stoltenberg, without giving further details, in order to preserve the operations.
