‘Walking with Aitana’ returns to the Titan Desert

“When I falter, I remember her and everything makes sense again.” The one who sometimes falters in mountain bike races is Damián Aragón, a national policeman by profession on the night shift. And she is Aitana, her seven-year-old daughter who suffers from Angelman Syndrome, a disease considered rare, still without remedy, which causes motor and cognitive delay, with ataxia (lack of muscle control) and episodes of epilepsy.

“I thought about how I could help her and, as I am passionate about cycling, in sport we have found visibility,” says Damián, who will return to the Moroccan desert to race the Titan Desert as of October 10, one of the toughest tests in the world, along with two other colleagues. They will be the ‘Walking with Aitana’ team, an initiative that it already undertook with the Titan 2018 and that has led it to other tests such as the Titan Saudi Arabia, Madrid-Lisbon, Pilgrim Race (Madrid-Santiago) or the next Madrid-Murcia Non Stop .

“The funds we collect are used to pay for Aitana’s therapies and to support research at the Foundation for Angelman Therapeutics Syndrome (FAST), the only institution in the world that from the United States is seeking a remedy for the disease, “explains Damián.

The family lives in Arganda del Rey (its town hall and local companies and the bicycle sector support its challenges) and Aitana attends a special education school in Rivas and the NIPACE Foundation in Guadalajara for therapy. In November he will undertake one of four hours a day throughout the month. Contributions can be made through its website (walkingconaitana.es) and migranodearena.org.

Behind the initiative, lending a hand in the shadows, are the professional cyclists Jesús and José Herrada, who act as loudspeakers. “I say that I have an ’emotional doping’ with Aitana on the bike,” jokes Damián, who takes hours from where he can to train. And to fight against an evil for which they want to find a remedy.
