Vuelta Time Trial Slashed to 12.2km Over Safety, Pro-Palestine Protests in Valladolid

Peloton rides fewer kilometers

Race officials at the Vuelta a España have shortened a key stage. What was supposed to be a challenging 27-kilometer time trial for Thursday’s 18th stage will now be much shorter. Riders will face only 12.2 kilometers. This sudden change comes after careful talks between the race organizers and the city of Valladolid. They also spoke with the College of Commissaires before making their final decision.

The main reason for cutting the stage’s length is rider safety. Public demonstrations in support of Palestine meant that security forces were stretched thin. It became impossible to guarantee enough law enforcement along the full original route. This unexpected situation forced organizers to make a difficult choice to protect the cyclists.

This change could hit some riders harder than others. João Almeida, racing for Emirates, now has less room to make up time. He’s currently 50 seconds behind Jonas Vingegaard of Visma. That gap stands after the 17th stage. Almeida, like many who excel against the clock, would have preferred a longer individual effort to chip away at the deficit. Now, his chances to gain crucial seconds are much smaller.
