Volkswagen Unveils Driverless Taxi, Plans 500 Vehicles for 2026

Volkswagen is betting big on self-driving cars, unveiling its ID. Buzz AD robotaxi. This car is designed to carry four passengers and their luggage, with a spacious trunk that can fit two large suitcases. The vehicle features sliding doors that make it easy to get in and out, even in tight spaces.

The ID. Buzz AD is the result of a partnership between Volkswagen and Mobileye, a subsidiary of Intel that specializes in AI software and hardware for cars. Volkswagen is joining the ranks of other major players like Waymo, Tesla, and Zoox, which are all racing to develop self-driving technology.

Volkswagen’s CEO, Christian Senger, sees huge potential in the AI business, with profits starting in the double digits, compared to single-digit profits in the traditional car business. The company plans to deliver 500 ID. Buzz AD cars in 2026, with the possibility of expanding to 10,000 cars in the future.

The ID. Buzz AD can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour and can operate 24/7 in any weather conditions. The car’s 2-meter height allows for the installation of a LiDAR scanner on the roof without looking bulky. It’s also equipped with 13 cameras, 5 radars, and 8 LiDAR sensors, covering a detection range of up to 300 meters.

Volkswagen’s strategy is to reduce the risk of long-term investment by integrating the production of self-driving cars into its existing manufacturing lines. This approach will also allow entrepreneurs to start their own robotaxi businesses by simply adding their logo to the cars.
