Europe’s electric car market is shifting gears. The latest numbers show a change at the top, with the Volkswagen Group taking the lead. This is bad news for Tesla, whose Model Y sales plummeted over 50%.
The Skoda Elroq is the clear winner, with 8,070 sales in April. It’s built on the same MEB platform as other Volkswagen models, like the ID3, ID7, and ID4. These models followed close behind in sales, with 6,937, 6,783, and 6,300 units sold, respectively. The Renault 5 E-Tech and Kia EV3 also made the top list, with 5,715 and 5,614 sales.
Tesla’s Model Y, the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe in 2024, dropped to 10th place in April. Sales fell by over 51%. An updated model is expected to arrive in the spring.
Overall, electric car sales rose 28% in April. Car manufacturers are pushing electric vehicles to meet the EU’s new emissions targets.
Volkswagen’s Winning Streak
The Volkswagen Group’s success can be attributed to its MEB platform. The Skoda Elroq, ID3, ID7, and ID4 all use this platform. Other notable electric vehicles include the Audi Q6 E-tron, with 3,971 sales, and the Citroen e-C3, with 3,862 sales.
Other European Markets
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales increased 32% in April, according to Dataforce. The BYD Seal U was the top-selling PHEV, with 5,300 units sold. The Tiguan and Volvo XC60 followed closely, with 5,195 and 5,192 sales, respectively.
Fully hybrid car sales rose 13%, with Toyota and Renault leading the pack. The Toyota Yaris Cross was the top seller, with 15,800 units sold in April. Two Renault models, the Symbioz and Dacia Duster, also had strong debuts, with 7,522 and 5,155 sales, respectively.
Non-hybrid petrol and diesel car sales fell 9.3% and 18%, respectively.
