Vodafone revolutionizes with this 5G technology in Portugal

Vodafone remains committed to showing how 5G can make a difference. Now, the use of Vodafone’s 5G network will allow the Port of Aveiro to monitor and manage its cargo in real time.

This will be done through digital replication solutions and virtual reality and augmented reality applications and devices. These technological innovations are being implemented in partnership with Ericsson. They promise to help reduce the environmental footprint of activities and improve the efficiency, safety and profitability of operations.

The project consists of a Cargo Management proof of concept. It is based on a state-of-the-art 5G private network with dedicated logistics software and high-definition cameras, and began to be implemented in May in one of the warehouses of the Multipurpose Terminal of the Port of Aveiro Administration.

It will allow port operators to achieve substantial progress in the location, movement and storage of cargo in this one of the five largest ports in the country. The solution developed by Ericsson is based on technologies studied and tested within the framework of the Corealis project for ports, within the framework of the European Horizon 2020 programme.

The solution has been praised for its positive impact on sustainability and energy efficiency

It should be noted that it has been widely recognized at various international events in the sector for its positive impact on sustainability, energy efficiency and CO2 reduction. It is based on a dedicated 5G standalone core and integrates 5G sensors with a number of innovative software applications.

Through a dedicated app, operators can identify, in real time, the position of all cargo in a designated area of the terminal. Through an Expert System and tablets with augmented reality, they will be able to guide cargo loading and storage operations.

A digital twin will also be available, a replica of the terminal in real time built with information collected from the cargo, the loading plan, freight and vehicles.

“The solution installed in the Port of Aveiro will allow those who are at the forefront of Portuguese exports every day to perceive the real advantages of a powerful, reliable and flexible 5G network like Vodafone’s”, begins by saying Henrique Fonseca, Director responsible for the Corporate Business Unit of Vodafone Portugal.

It also highlights that “by streamlining your tasks and allowing you to expand your activity, our network makes a clear contribution to one of the nerve centers of the national economy, opening the way to other operators who want to implement differentiated solutions”.
