The football pitch held its breath this past Saturday. Vizela, playing away from home, managed to snatch a 1-1 draw against Portimonense. This hard-fought point was enough to lift them, at least for a while, to the top of the Second League standings. It was the third game of the season, and it offered plenty of drama for the fans.
Portimonense exploded out of the gate. They needed just two minutes to get on the scoreboard. Defender Douglas Grolli cleared the ball with a long kick. Tamble Monteiro brought it down perfectly and then set up Brazilian winger Ruan. Ruan didn’t miss, sending the home crowd into early celebrations.
That early goal seemed to fuel Portimonense even more. Just three minutes later, they nearly doubled their lead. Tamble Monteiro took another shot, but Vizela’s goalkeeper Antonio Gomis made a fantastic diving save. He soared through the air, pushing the ball away and keeping his team in the game.
Vizela took a while to find their rhythm. They finally showed some life about fifteen minutes in. Manu Garrido fired a strong shot, forcing Portimonense’s goalkeeper, Cibois, into a big save. From that moment on, the game became a more balanced affair. Both teams created chances, and danger lingered near both goals.
The second half saw a completely different Vizela. They came out looking much sharper and more determined. In the 66th minute, Miguel Tavares blasted a shot. It seemed destined for the net, but Cibois got a hand to it, pushing it onto the post. The equalizer was just around the corner. A minute later, from a corner kick, center-back José Sampaio bundled the ball into the net with his chest. Cibois, despite his earlier heroics, could do nothing to stop it.
Vizela kept pressing, showing their hunger for a win. Portimonense only managed to slow their momentum a bit towards the end. Even then, Antonio Gomis proved to be the stronger man. He faced Camilo Durán twice in quick succession and came out on top both times, preserving the draw for his side.
