The wait is over for fans of foldable phones. Vivo just teased its latest model, the X Fold5, in China. This new device promises to be super slim – even thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro when opened. It also weighs less than 219 grams, making it a great option for those who want a lightweight phone.
One of the key features of the X Fold5 is its durability. Han Boxiao, vivo’s product manager in China, confirmed that this phone is the first in the industry to meet three key standards: water, dust, and drop resistance. Here’s what that means:
* IP5X: This is the highest level of dust protection, outdoing the vivo X Fold4 which didn’t have this level of protection.
* IPX8: The X Fold5 can withstand being submerged in water up to 3 meters deep. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 can only handle 1.5 meters.
* IPX9: This standard means the phone can handle high water pressure and temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius. Vivo claims the X Fold5 can fold and unfold underwater up to 1,000 times.
* IPX9+: This means the phone is also resistant to drops and other impacts.
But that’s not all. The X Fold5 has some impressive specs, including a large 8.03-inch OLED screen that uses LTPO technology, allowing for a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The cover screen is a 6.53-inch AMOLED panel with the same 120 Hz refresh rate.
Under the hood, the X Fold5 is expected to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, made with 4-nanometer technology, and a top speed of 3.3 GHz. It will come with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
The camera system on the X Fold5 is also worth noting. It features a triple-camera setup, co-developed with Zeiss, consisting of a 50-megapixel main camera (using the Sony IMX921 sensor), a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 50-megapixel periscope camera with 3x optical zoom. The front cameras, both on the cover screen and inside, have a 32-megapixel resolution.
Other features include a large 6,000 mAh battery with 90 W fast charging and 30 W wireless charging.
Vivo is expected to launch the X Fold5 in China in June 2025, with a global launch planned for the third quarter of 2025. This phone is shaping up to be one of the most exciting foldable devices of the year.
