Vitalik Buterin Unveils New Step in Ethereum Roadmap

Ethereum (ETH) founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled a new version of the Ethereum roadmap last weekend. This time Buterin has taken a new stept added network roadmap, called the “scourge.” The primary role of the Scourge will be countering censorship and increasing decentralization of Ethereum.

Ethereum not yet in Scourge, but Surge

Ethereum is currently in the second phase of the roadmap. This is the Surge. This phase is all about improving scalability by increasing the number of transactions per second. Currently, the Ethereum network processes several dozen transactions per second. Changes during the current phase should increase this number to potentially 100,000 transactions per second.

The previous phase, the Merge, was finalized in September with the much anticipated transition of the network to a proof-of-stake (PoS) system. This adjustment made ether miners obsolete and resulted in 99.9% less energy consumption of the network.

Buterin has scheduled the new Scourge phase after the completion of the Surge. The reason for this is a number of issues that arose after the transition to the proof-of-stake system. Since the transition, it is possible for some miners to manipulate certain transactions. Miners do this by making transactions front running. This means that they can determine which transactions are executed in which order.

A completely neutral crypto network

This is a significant problem as it significantly increases censorship and centralization. Recently, Buterin indicated that Ethereum has the ambition to become a fully neutral blockchain that does not “discriminate against or against any particular person”. Such problems are thus highly undesirable. Hence Buterin’s radical choice to plan a completely new phase.

A Leading Proponent of Ethereum, Anthony Sassano claims via Twitter that Ethereum’s censorship problem has a higher priority than the scalability problem. Nevertheless, the phase that should address the scalability problem of Ethereum follows first.

Exact details of the new Scourge have not yet been made public. The update will begin after the current Surge phase is completed. Ethereum developers are currently preparing the Surge. This update is called Shanghai and should be implemented sometime around September next year.
