Vitalik Buterin, the creator and co-founder of Ethereum, believes that commercial attempts to build the Metaverse will fail. “It’s too early to know what people really want,” Buterin said. Furthermore, the creator of Ethereum points out that at the moment no one can even explain what the term “Metaverse” means.
In a thread on Twitter, Vitalik Buterin discusses the future of the Metaverse. In it he writes, among other things, that the current commercial projects do not look very promising. After which he criticizes the efforts of Meta, the tech company of Mark Zuckerberg, in particular.
“We don’t know the definition of the Metaverse yet and it’s too early to know what people really want. Everything Facebook is developing now is a mistake,” Buterin said clearly. The Metaverse is often described as the evolution of the Internet. A combination of virtual worlds and online communities in which people live together.
“The Metaverse Is Inevitable”
Although Buterin is not necessarily convinced of the attempts of commercial parties to do anything with the Metaverse, he believes the concept itself is inevitable. “The Metaverse is going to happen, but I don’t think any of the existing commercial efforts to create a Metaverse have a future,” Buterin continues.
The future of the Metaverse looks set to be a battle between the centralized and decentralized alternatives for now. The disadvantage for the decentralized world is that the centralized parties have huge amounts of capital.
With that capital, they can theoretically make their version of the Metaverse a lot more attractive than the decentralized version. “I believe the Metaverse is the next chapter for the internet. Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people and the Metaverse is the next step,” said Mark Zuckerberg.
