Vitalik Buterin Calls Russian Invasion a Crime

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted on Wednesday that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a crime against the Ukrainian and Russian people.

Russian invasion

“I am very upset by Putin’s decision to drop the possibility of a peaceful solution to the conflict with Ukraine and go to war instead.”

After recognizing the independence of two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would conduct a special military operation in Ukraine. In the eyes of the rest of the world, it is seen as the start of a war.

Earlier this month, Buterin appealed in Russian to Putin† He urged Putin to de-escalate the conflict himself, tweeting:

“An attack on Ukraine will only harm Russia, Ukraine and humanity.”

Buterin was born in Russia in the years immediately following the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2000 he left for Canada with his family. In this year, Putin became president of Russia. Vitalik’s father Dmitry has strong opinions about Putin.

“He is KGB, and those are the people who tortured and killed millions of Russians and Ukrainians,” he told Decrypt news site.

Previous meeting with Putin

In 2017, Vitalik met Putin in an attempt to get Russia to use the Ethereum network. Putin is positive about crypto currencies like Ethereum and Bitcoin. This became apparent recently when Putin rejected a judgment from Russia’s central bank by suggesting that the country’s energy resources could provide certain competitive advantages when mining Bitcoin. According to several experts, Russia could use cryptocurrencies to counter western sanctions.

But neither Putin nor Russia has ever fully embraced cryptocurrencies. Crypto seems to run counter to authoritarianism. Distributed blockchains, run by thousands of people around the world, are impartial and decentralized in design. Yet they are made by people with political perspectives.
