Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket After 14-Year Glorious Career

Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket, following closely on the heels of Rohit Sharma’s decision to hang up his boots. This marks the end of an era for Indian cricket, as the duo’s presence will no longer be seen together in both Test and T20 formats. Over his illustrious 14-year Test career, Kohli has shattered numerous records, etching his name in the annals of cricket history.

Captaincy Records

Kohli’s leadership credentials are undeniable. As captain, he holds the record for the most Test centuries by an Indian player, with 20 tons in 68 matches. Sunil Gavaskar is second on the list with 11 centuries as captain. Under his stewardship, India won 40 out of 68 Tests, boasting an impressive win percentage of 58.82.

Some of Kohli’s other notable achievements as captain include:

  • Most successful Indian captain in Test cricket
  • Highest win percentage among Indian captains with over 10 Test matches

A Legacy of Runs

Kohli’s batting prowess is equally impressive. He is the Indian player with the most double centuries in Test cricket, having scored seven double tons. His last double century came against South Africa in 2019. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag are joint second on the list with six double centuries each.

In terms of overall runs, Kohli is the fourth-highest run-scorer for India in Test cricket, accumulating 9,230 runs across 123 matches. Only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar have scored more runs for India in the format.

A Trailblazer

Kohli has also achieved several milestones that had previously eluded Indian cricketers. He became the first Indian player to score four centuries in a single overseas tour, achieving this feat on two separate occasions – during India’s tour of Australia in 2014-15 and England in 2016-17.
