Vinod Kapri’s film ‘Pyre’ just took home a major win. It snagged the Audience Award for Best Film at the 16th Chicago South Asian Film Festival. This adds another shining trophy to its already impressive collection. Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi presented the prestigious award. This marks Kapri’s fourth victory in America.
‘Pyre’ tells a moving story about hope and our roots. It first captivated audiences at the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in November 2024. Since then, this film has been making waves at many international festivals.
The Story’s Heartbeat
At its heart, the movie follows an elderly couple, Padam and Tulsi. They live a simple life in a quiet, distant village high in the Himalayas. Most of their village’s young people have moved to big cities for work. Padam and Tulsi worry about who will perform their final ceremonies after they pass. Then, a letter arrives from their son after three whole decades. This unexpected message brings a fresh sense of hope into their lives.
A Global Journey of Awards
‘Pyre’ has collected many honors from around the globe. It earned Best Feature Film at the 14th DC South Asian Film Festival. The film also won Best Feature Film and Best Director at the 8th Indian International Film Festival of Boston. It is also scheduled to receive the ‘German Star of India’ award in July 2025 at the Stuttgart Indian Film Festival. In just one month, it gathered five international awards. This impressive run included three audience choice awards from Germany, Spain, and the UK.
Faces Behind the Emotion
The main roles in ‘Pyre’ are played by Padam Singh and Heera Devi. Interestingly, they are not professional actors. Both were nominated for Best Actor and Actress at the 25th New York Indian Film Festival. Their natural performances truly touched critics and viewers alike.
The Creative Crew
A skilled team brought this beautiful story to life. Mychael Danna and Amrita Vaz composed the music. Patricia Rommel and Subhajit Sinha carefully edited the film. The legendary poet Gulzar contributed his words. Finally, Vinod Kapri and Sakshi Joshi worked as the producers.
