Vinod Kapri’s Award-Winning Pyre Premieres Across US Cities This September.

Let’s talk about a film that’s truly on a roll. Director Vinod Kapri’s movie, ‘Pyre,’ has been earning praise and awards around the globe, making India proud at several international film festivals. Now, it’s set to charm audiences across the United States with special premiere screenings. This inspiring Indian film is making a big splash, showing that powerful stories connect with everyone.

America is Calling for ‘Pyre’

‘Pyre’ will tour three major American cities this September as part of its ongoing world journey. It kicks off on September 7th in Washington D.C. The prestigious Washington D.C. South Asian Film Festival chose ‘Pyre’ as its closing night feature. Director Kapri, a National Award-winning filmmaker, will surely be a highlight at the event.

Next, on September 14th, Boston gets its turn. ‘Pyre’ will wrap up the 8th India International Film Festival of Boston. Finally, the film heads to the popular 16th Chicago South Asian Film Festival on September 21st. It’s quite a feat; ‘Pyre’ is the first Indian film ever to screen at three big US film festivals in just one month.

Director Vinod Kapri himself shared his excitement on social media. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) about ‘Pyre’ being the closing film for the DCSAFF. He even shared the date and venue details for the D.C. screening: Sunday, September 7th, at 4:30 PM, at Regal Rockville Center, located at 199 E, Montgomery Ave, Rockville, MD 20850, United States. A link for tickets was also included in his tweet.

A Story from the Heart

What’s all the fuss about this film? ‘Pyre’ tells the touching tale of Padam and Tulsi, an older couple living in a remote village in the Himalayas. Their home is slowly emptying out as people leave for the cities, a situation known as migration. This makes the couple worry about who will perform their last rites when their time comes. But then, their world dramatically changes. They receive a letter from their estranged son, who they haven’t seen in 30 years. This unexpected message brings them new hope and a reason to keep going. What makes it even more special? The film features non-professional actors from the Himalayan region, bringing a realness to the story.

Globally Recognized and Awarded

Before hitting the US, ‘Pyre’ already collected a heap of awards. In July 2025, it won the “Band Jury Best Feature Film” award at the Indian Film Festival in Stuttgart, Germany, also known as the “German Star of India Award.” It also snagged four “Best Film” awards in Spain and the UK. So, in just one month, ‘Pyre’ picked up five international honors. Three of these were “Best Film Audience Awards,” showing how much people truly love it.
