Investigation into Racist Insults Against Vinicius Jr.
Vinicius Jr., the Real Madrid footballer, has been summoned to testify as an injured party in a case involving racist insults directed at him during a match against Barcelona in October 2023. The judge presiding over the case, Carmen García, will hear Vinicius’ testimony via videoconference on January 23rd.
The investigation was initiated after the Mossos d’Esquadra identified two Barcelona fans as the authors of the racist chants. The fans have denied any wrongdoing, despite evidence from stadium cameras and witness statements. The Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office of Barcelona, LaLiga, and Real Madrid have all filed accusations in the case.
Investigation Underway
The investigation has been ongoing, with the magistrate opening proceedings and summoning the two fans to testify as accused. The case has also involved the identification of a minor, who will be investigated in the corresponding jurisdiction.
The use of stadium cameras and witness statements has been crucial in identifying the perpetrators of the racist chants. The magistrate has taken a strong stance against hate crimes, and the case is being closely monitored by the relevant authorities.
Previous Cases
This is not the first time Vinicius Jr. has been the victim of racist insults on the field. In June, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for directing racist insults at the player during a match. Additionally, four ultras are awaiting trial for hanging a doll with Vinicius’ shirt on a bridge near the Real Madrid sports city.
The Barcelona Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office has been at the forefront of taking racism in football to court, filing a complaint in 2020 for the insults received by Athletic Club footballer Iñaki Williams. The case is still pending trial.
