Villarreal Wins Thrilling 3-2 Match with Late Goal, Jumps to Second in La Liga

Villarreal secured a dramatic 3-2 victory against Real Sociedad on Sunday, scoring a stoppage-time winner to provisionally climb to second place in the Spanish La Liga after letting a two-goal lead slip.

Midfielder Moleiro was the hero, sealing all three points for Villarreal with his second goal of the match in the 95th minute.

The late triumph brings Villarreal to 32 points, temporarily drawing level with Real Madrid, who were set to play later on Sunday against Girona.

The win also widened Villarreal’s lead over fourth-placed Atlético Madrid to one point; Atlético had secured 31 points after defeating Oviedo 2-0 on Saturday.

Villarreal initially took control of the match in the Basque Country, with Ayoze Pérez opening the scoring in the 31st minute after an assist from Alfonso Pedraza.

Moleiro then doubled Villarreal’s lead in the 57th minute with a powerful shot from outside the box, seemingly putting them on course for an easy victory.

However, Real Sociedad mounted a determined comeback. Carlos Soler reduced the deficit to 2-1 just four minutes later, at the 61-minute mark, with a strong strike.

Substitute Ander Barrenetxea then equalized for the home side in the 87th minute, converting a masterfully taken free-kick to make it 2-2.

The final moments saw a frenetic push from both teams, but it was Moleiro who ultimately delivered the winning goal for the visitors just before the final whistle.

Moleiro, a midfielder signed from Las Palmas, now boasts six goals in La Liga this season. FC Barcelona currently leads the league provisionally with 34 points.

Real Sociedad, which featured Portuguese player Gonçalo Guedes for 77 minutes, remains in ninth place with 16 points following the defeat. Portuguese player Renato Veiga was on the bench for Villarreal but did not play.
