VIDEO. Shipwreck of migrants in the Mediterranean: “There are no means of rescue at sea worthy of the name”, laments Doctors of the World

“There are no means of rescue at sea worthy of the name”, lamented Thursday, June 15 on BlazeTrends, Florence Rigal, president of the NGO Doctors of the World while off the coast of Greece nearly 80 migrants lost their lives in a shipwreck last Tuesday. This is a provisional balance sheet.

“Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have died on this course in the central Mediterranean. It’s a real cemetery”, she said. “We expect a strong mobilization of the States”, she added. The migrants had left Libya aboard a fishing boat. Their boat capsized off the Peloponnese.

We need “a real sea rescue policy”

“We are really calling for a real sea rescue policy, supported by the States”, she said. She would like Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, to engage in rescue at sea: “It is all the States which must mobilize to put boats on the spot. In any case, people are on the move”she says.

“We leave rescue at sea to associations, civil society organizations to which we multiply the obstacles.”

“These tragedies do not deter people from moving. We expect a strong mobilization of the States. Indeed, these are financial commitments, but which are essential to save people”, assures Florence Rigal. “We cannot be in a society that agrees to let people die”she said.
