VIDEO: Landslide in Turkish mine traps 9 people

At least nine people are trapped in a gold mine in the northeastern Turkish province of Erzincan, the mayor of the city of the same name said on Tuesday. At the moment, the exact number of people trapped underground is not known, Bekir Aksun added in statements to private Turkish broadcaster NTV.

“There is no news about nine miners. A rescue operation is being carried out with a team of 400 people,” Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, quoted by media. The landslide occurred around 2 p.m. in Iliç (pronounced Ilicht) and rescue teams from neighboring towns were sent to the scene, state disaster management agency Afad said.

“We will mobilize all our resources to uncover the reasons for this incident,” said the company responsible for the Anagold gold mine.
