Global warming has resulted in an increase in hot weather in cities. According Aude Lemonsu, research director at the CNRM, this disruption would cause health impacts that could go as far as death, which is notably on the rise. In this context, Marine Goret, a research engineer at the CNRM, is taking meteorological readings of air temperature, humidity and wind in the Parc Montsouris, in order to study the cooling effect of the parks. “The interest of the measurements we make here is to quantify how many degrees we will gain, depending on the parks, also depending on the humidity of the soil and the size of the park.”, she indicates.

“We can clearly see the interest of the vegetation”

The engineer observes a loss of 4 degrees in 4 hours in the park, due to the vegetation which, with the humidity in the ground, will allow a faster cooling of the space rather than in the city on a concrete floor . “During the day, there isn’t really a big difference between a park and concrete, but overall, the air temperature is the same, more or less. On the other hand, at night, we see several degrees of difference. You can go up to 7 or 8°C, in, for example, the Bois de Vincennes.”, explains Jean-François Ribaud, research engineer at IPSL. According to him, these measures are therefore necessary to enable communities to act on the climate.
