The former US president began by describing “one man’s decision to launch a totally unwarranted and brutal invasion of Iraq”. Before making a face and correcting yourself: “I mean, from Ukraine.”

George W. Bush was in fact at the head of the United States when the invasion of Iraq was decided on in 2003 and quickly qualified there too as brutal and unjustified. During his speech on Wednesday, the former American leader also compared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to a “cool little guy”, “the Churchill of the 21st century”.
