Victor Robles scored the go-ahead run on a three-base throwing error by Josh Hader and rookie Alex Call followed with his first career home run, a two-run homer, as the Washington Nationals defeated 6-3 to the San Diego Padres Friday.
It was the second straight tough outing for Hader (2-5), the major league saves leader who has struggled since being obtained from Milwaukee on Aug. 1. He was booed as he was walking off the field after being called out by manager Bob Melvin.
Hader led off the ninth with the game trailing 3-3 and gave Robles a leadoff walk, drawing boos for the second night in a row.
Later, Call, who made his major league debut on July 11, hit a two-run homer to the left-field seats.
Erasmo Ramirez (4-1) pitched a perfect eighth for the win and Kyle Finnegan pitched the ninth for his seventh save.
For the Nationals, the Mexican Joey Meneses 5-1, one scored. The Dominicans Robles 3-0, one scored, and Nelson Cruz 5-2. The Venezuelans Keibert Ruiz 2-2, one scored, one RBI; César Hernández 5-1, one scored; and Ildemaro Vargas 4-1.
For the Padres, the Dominicans Juan Soto 3-0, one scored, and Nomar Mazara 1-0. Colombian Jorge Alfaro 3-0.
Dodgers 2; Marlins 1
Will Smith grounded out a fielder’s choice in which Mookie Betts scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Friday night.
The Dodgers achieved their 34th victory with a comeback included. No club has achieved more in the Major Leagues this season.
Betts scored on a rare play in which catcher Jacob Stallings left the plate. Third baseman Jon Berti fielded Smith’s grounder and wanted to throw home, but Stallings had moved to first without anyone covering the plate.
The inning began with a triple by Betts. Trea Turner was grounded out and Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked, leaving the table open for Smith.
A stellar defensive play by Trayce Thompson deprived Nick Fortes of a game-tying home run early in the ninth. He jumped to make the catch and crashed into the center field wall, never letting go of the ball.
Chris Martin (4-0) got the win in one-inning relief. Evan Phillips processed the ninth to get his second save.
The Dodgers improved to 22-6 since the All-Star break.
Dylan Floro (0-2), a former Dodgers pitcher, allowed one run and one hit in an inning of relief.
For the Marlins, the Venezuelans Miguel Rojas 4-0, Jesús Aguilar 4-1. The Dominican Jerar Encarnación 2-1 with an RBI.
For the Dodgers, the Dominican Hanser Alberto 3-0.
Sailors 10; Athletics 2
Eugenio Suarez homered twice and drove in five runs for the Seattle Mariners, who clinched their fourth straight victory by beating the Oakland Athletics 10-2 on Friday.
Marco Gonzales (8-12) allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings to beat Oakland for the third time this season.
Seattle held a half-game lead over Toronto in the race for the first AL wild card. The Mariners (66-54) are 37-15 in their last 52 games, the best in the majors in that span.
Suarez hit both of his home runs off left-hander Cole Irvin (6-11): a two-run in the fourth that put Seattle up 3-2 and a three-run shot to center field in the sixth for the 6-2.
Suarez has 22 homers this season, his first with Seattle, and 151 since 2018, the most in the majors in that span.
Oakland had two runs to take a 2-1 lead over Gonzales in the first inning, but its offense fizzled out and it fell to Seattle for the 20th time in 23 meetings.
The stat includes 10 straight losses to the Mariners at the Coliseum and the A’s tied their longest losing streak at home since the club moved to Oakland in 1968.
The A’s trailed 6-2 when they loaded the bases and went one out in the sixth inning.
But Matt Brash, who relieved Gonzales, struck out Viamel Machin and retired another pinch hitter, Tony Kemp, on a choice play off a ground ball.
For the Athletics, Puerto Rican Vimael Machin 2-0.
For the Mariners, the Dominican Julio Rodríguez 5-1, two runs scored. The Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez 5-2, two runs scored, 5 produced.
