Víctor Estrella: “I don’t think I’ll come back”

The RD Open by Milex returned in 2022 after two years of absence due to the pandemic, but the break made it stronger by becoming the highest-level ATP Challenger tournament in all of Latin America.

The event, which began on August 15, will run until the next 21 on the courts of the Santo Domingo Tennis Club (La Bocha) with more attractions than ever: new grandstands, more entertainment for the public and the return of Víctor Estrella to the competition, now in doubles.

The decision of the most successful tennis player in history has attracted the attention of locals and strangers, and the question immediately arose: is it the first step for Víctor to return to the professional tour?

Although he does not have a convincing answer, the 42-year-old from Santiago said that he is enjoying seeing his people, the moment of competing at home and in a tournament in which he was champion in 2017.

“The idea of being here is to support the tournament, see the Dominican tennis players and share a little. I have prepared well because I have always been a responsible player. It’s not that I came out of retirement because I don’t think I’ll play professionally again,” revealed Estrella.

Despite not giving a clear answer about his return or not to the circuit, the former world 43 said that he is very focused on his family and that returning to the demands of professional competition is something he would not like to experience again.

“It’s not in my plans, many things can come up, it depends on how you feel on the court, but as a connoisseur of the tour, what it means to be in a tournament, train, sacrifice… I don’t know if I would have that will again”, clarified.

Estrella plays doubles at the RD Open by Milex, along with Peter Bertran, the current second Dominican racket.

in retirement

Now that he is off the courts, the triple champion from Quito assures that he spends more time with his family, although he is not far away, since he offers advice to the players, however, he hopes to do more for the development of this discipline in the country in the near future.

“I spend a lot of time with my youngest daughter, I spend a lot of time with the family, with my mom, with my brothers, but I’m still involved in tennis because I give advice to some players, although I hope to do more for Dominican tennis,” he said.

The first match of the Santiago duo was this Wednesday against Purav Raja and Divij Sharan, from India.
