Veteran Dharmendra: Over 300 Films, Just One Web Series as Sufi Saint

Bollywood legend Dharmendra, known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, has cultivated an extensive filmography over a 65-year career, starring in hundreds of movies. Despite this prolific cinematic journey, the veteran actor has reportedly ventured into the digital streaming space only once. This single project marks his debut and, so far, his only appearance in a web series.

His sole web series is titled “Taj: Royal Blood,” which premiered in 2023. In the series, Dharmendra took on the role of the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti. This character, while not extensive in screen time, was considered crucial to the narrative.

Dharmendra’s transformation for the role was significant. Many viewers found him almost unrecognizable in his costume, which featured a long robe, a turban, and a flowing white beard, fully embodying the look of a Sufi saint.

“Taj: Royal Blood” is a historical drama set during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The storyline is fictional but draws inspiration from real historical events and figures. The series was released in two seasons, both of which became available within a two-month period.

The ensemble cast of “Taj: Royal Blood” featured several prominent actors alongside Dharmendra. Aditi Rao Hydari portrayed Anarkali, while Naseeruddin Shah played Emperor Akbar. Aasim Gulati appeared as Prince Salim, Zarina Wahab as Salima Sultan Begum, Rahul Bose as Mirza Hakim, and Sandhya Mridul as Jodha Bai.
