The film world recently said goodbye to actress Nazima, who passed away at 77. She was known for her steady presence in many movies. For decades, Nazima brought characters to life as the beloved friend or supportive sister on screen.
Bollywood’s “Resident Sister”
Nazima, born on March 25, 1948, in Nashik, earned the affectionate title of Bollywood’s “Resident Sister.” She truly mastered the art of playing those crucial, often emotional, secondary roles. Her passing on Monday, August 11, was confirmed by her cousin, Zareen Babu, who shared the sad news on social media. At the time of her death, Nazima lived in Mumbai’s Dadar area with her two sons.
Starting as a Child Star
Nazima’s journey in cinema began early. She made her debut as a child artist, then known as Baby Chand, in the film ‘Do Bigha Zameen.’ In that movie, she played the older sister among two siblings. She continued to appear in significant childhood roles, such as young Paro’s classmate in ‘Devdas’ and Abhi Bhattacharya’s sister in ‘Biraj Bahu.’ She also featured in Raj Kapoor’s children’s film, ‘Ab Delhi Door Nahin.’
A Consistent Presence on Screen
As she grew, Nazima continued to grace the big screen. She teamed up with Sanjeev Kumar in films like ‘Nishan,’ which featured the song “Hai Tabassum Tera.” She was also in ‘Raja Aur Rank,’ known for its songs “O Firki Wali” and “Sang Basanti.” Nazima shared the screen with superstar Rajesh Khanna in ‘Aurat’ and ‘Doli.’ Her filmography also includes ‘Manchali,’ ‘Prem Nagar,’ ‘Anurag,’ and ‘Beimaan.’ She famously played Asha Parekh’s sister in ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke,’ a film featuring “Ae Kaash Kisi Deewane Ko.” In 1972, she notably took on the role of Manoj Kumar’s sister in ‘Beimaan.’
