Opposition Leader’s Family Targeted in Venezuela
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has reported that her mother’s home in Caracas has been surrounded by security forces. This incident occurred shortly after former presidential candidate Edmundo González accused the government of kidnapping his son-in-law, Rafael Tudares.
Security Forces Surround Opposition Leader’s Mother’s Home
Machado stated that agents of the regime have been surrounding her mother’s house for several hours, with checkpoints set up throughout the area and drones flying overhead. Additionally, the power in the area has gone out.
Machado expressed concern for her 84-year-old mother, who is in poor health and has chronic health conditions. She condemned the actions of President Nicolás Maduro’s government, calling them “evil” and “cowardly.”
Former Presidential Candidate’s Son-in-Law Missing
This incident comes after González reported that his son-in-law was intercepted by “hooded men” while on his way to take the opposition leader’s grandchildren to school. González stated that his son-in-law is currently missing.
Maduro’s Inauguration Amidst Opposition Protests
President Maduro is set to take office on Friday in Caracas, despite opposition attempts to return to the capital. González, who recently met with US President Joe Biden in Washington, is currently touring the region.
Disputed Presidential Elections
Venezuela held presidential elections in late July, which the ruling party claimed Maduro won. However, the opposition disputed the results, demanding that the authorities present the minutes to support Maduro’s re-election.
