Santa Clara’s coach, Vasco Matos, often sees beyond the score sheet. On Sunday, after a 0-0 draw against Estrela da Amadora, he had a big smile. It was the fourth match day of Liga Portugal Betclic, and his team hadn’t scored. Yet, Matos declared it their finest performance of the entire season.

He wasn’t just being positive for the cameras. Matos described a game played almost entirely on Santa Clara’s terms. His players pressed hard, owning the ball and moving it across the field with purpose. They created chances, making it a “one-way” affair, he noted. It sounds like they controlled the flow, even if the goal eluded them.
This point was special. It was Santa Clara’s first point in what Matos called a “difficult month.” The difficult month was also a time of “great learning for all of us,” Matos added. His team had faced limitations, like a long journey and a game in Ireland against Shamrock Rovers. This caused a lot of tiredness, but they worked to find the best game plan.
The players responded well to these solutions. The team also responded well. This, he noted, confirms the work is happening. And it’s being done correctly. “This encourages us,” Matos shared. He believes the team is on a clear path of growth. More challenges lie ahead, but this performance, even without a win, gives them a boost.
