Var: a woman seriously burned after an explosion in the port of Hyères

An explosion took place this Saturday aboard a speedboat leaving the port of Hyères (Var). A woman in an absolute emergency was taken to hospital.

The explosion, violent according to witnesses, occurred when the boat “had just left the bunkering station of the port of Saint-Pierre”, reports the town hall of Hyères. The occupants of the boat had refueled there.

About thirty firefighters mobilized

Four people were evacuated to hospital, including a woman in her fifties who was on board. In a state of absolute emergency, she was referred to the Sainte-Anne hospital in Toulon, specializing in the care of severe burns.

According to France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the other three people are a 50-year-old port worker who suffered the blast, a 14-year-old girl who took the plunge and a 49-year-old father. The young girl is unharmed, the father is in a state of shock but does not carry any “visible” wounds, according to the SDIS 83.

About thirty firefighters intervened. The boat was towed offshore to prevent the fire from spreading to other boats.

The firefighters reported to France Bleu Provence that the explosion could be due to an “accumulation of gasoline vapors in the bilge, associated with the starting of an already very hot engine”.
