Van Wilder scores an Alaphilippe and Cort Nielsen wins at Alto de Foia

Another new slap on the wrist is coming Patrick Lefevere within the Soudal Quick-Step. And it is that almost three years after the historic mistake made by Julian Alaphilippe in Liège-Bastogne-Liège when he celebrated the victory ahead of time and presented success to Cousin Roglic, this Thursday at the second stage of the Tour of the Algarve, another of his boys has ‘imitated’ the unfortunate maneuver of the Frenchman.

Ilan van Wilder, promising 22-year-old climber, raised his arms prematurely in the High of Foia, emblematic peak of the Portuguese round, and gave the win to the always opportunistic Magnus Cort Nielsen in the last kidney stroke. The Belgian could have wanted it, who was seen with the first victory of his professional record. His miscalculation also grants him the overall lead to the Danish runner from EF Education.

In a day of medium mountains, with four scoring ports, the end in Foia ended up passing sentence. No one managed to break through their 7.7 km at 6.1% average, so everything remained to be resolved in a reduced sprint that included the great favorites of the general classification: Jai Hindley, Rui Costa, Tobias Foss, Sergio Higuita, Joao Almeida, Daniel Felipe Martínez… Van Wilder took the lead in the final yards, raised his right arm in victory, and Cort Nielsen swiped his wallet on the inside of the turn leading to the finish line. This Friday, predictable arrival to the sprint in the town of Tavira.
